Navigating the 6000-Series Magnesium-Silicon Alloys
Over 85% of global extrusion volume relies on 6000-series heat-treatable alloys. While they all share excellent corrosion resistance and weldability, subtle variations in magnesium and silicon ratios yield significantly different mechanical strengths and anodizing responses.
Engineering Decision Matrix
- •Choose 6063 if surface aesthetics, complex thin-wall geometries, or thermal conductivity are your primary design drivers.
- •Choose 6061 or 6082 if high structural load capacity, bolt hole shear resistance, or extensive CNC pocket milling is required.
- •Choose 6005A for heavy-duty solar rails and structural profiles that require higher strength than 6063 but tighter dimensional control than 6061.
